Abstract
This study examined the importance and performance levels of the vocational preparatory education(VPE) for high school students with intellectual disabilities. The study implemented the survey research with 132 questionnaires from the teachers of special classes in high schools and special schools. The results of the study were as follows. First, special education teachers thought the VPE for the students with intellectual disabilities very seriously, and the VPE was carried practically. Second, they taught the VPE for the students with intellectual disabilities lower than the importance level which they considered. Third, according to the career of the special education teachers, there was no significant difference in the importance and performance of the VPE. And special class teachers thought job preparation training more important than special school teachers, and there was no difference between them in performance levels. In addition, there was no significant difference in the importance and the performance of the VPE between the teachers who majored in vacational education and the teachers who didn¡¯t. The teachers who have completed vocational education training considered the VPE for intellectual disabilities more important than the teachers who haven¡¯t. However, there was no significant difference in the performance levels. In further researches, qualitative approaches to the experience gained while performing the VPE for students with intellectual disability would be required. From those studies, special education teachers would be able to understand why there are some differences between the perception of the importance and the performance levels of the VPE.
